Barcodes for Food Products: When You Need One (and When You Don’t)

Posted Feb 11th, 2026

Barcodes are one of those things many food entrepreneurs think they must have from day one. The truth is simpler.

Barcodes are not required by Fraser Health.

You do not need a barcode to get health approval or to operate from a licensed commissary kitchen. Barcodes become important only when you start selling to larger retail stores, grocery chains, or distributors that require them for inventory systems.

So when should you consider getting one?

When Barcodes Become Necessary

If you plan to sell to:

  • Major grocery chains
  • Larger independent retailers
  • Distribution companies
  • Online platforms that require inventory tracking

… you will likely need a proper barcode (also called a GTIN or UPC).

Smaller markets, cafés, and direct-to-customer sales usually do not require barcodes.

The Only Official Barcode Provider in Canada

In Canada, the official provider of barcodes is GS1 Canada.

Visit their website for more information:

GS1 assigns you a unique company prefix, which allows you to create legitimate product numbers (GTINs) registered to your business. Retailers recognize and trust GS1-issued codes.

While there is a cost involved, it’s an investment in doing things properly, especially if your goal is to scale into larger stores.

Free Barcode Generators: Why They’re Risky

It can be tempting to download a free barcode online. However, this can create serious problems.

A free barcode image may:

  • Belong to another company
  • Already be registered to a different product
  • Cause conflicts in retail systems
  • Be rejected by stores

The important part is not the image, it’s the unique number combination behind it. That number must be officially registered to your business.

Using someone else’s number can create confusion, rejected shipments, or even product removal from shelves.

Final Thoughts

Barcodes are not required for health approval and are not necessary for every food business.
But when the time comes to enter larger retail spaces, it’s important to do it correctly.

Invest in the code number, not just the image.
It protects your brand, your products, and your growth.
